Miles called the next day during my lunch break and invited me to his house for dinner. “Come on, Pipe. Lauren’s making spaghetti with her homemade sauce. We’ve got garlic bread and a salad, and I’ll do all the dishes.”

I’d been avoiding the invite for a while. Maybe if I went, he and Lauren would be satisfied and stop asking. Besides, Lauren’s family recipe was delish. “Why do I get the feeling you want something from me?” I asked.

Miles laughed. “It’s dinner!”

“Hmm,” I hedged. “What time?”

“Six o’clock.”

“Can I bring ice cream for dessert?” I hated showing up empty-handed. Plus, I wanted to solidify my place as favorite aunt.

“Sure,” Miles said. “As long as you bring rocky road.” I hated marshmallows, unless they were clouds, but I could get a gallon of Miles’s favorite to pacify him.

After work and a quick stop at the store, Miles greeted me at the door and took the ice cream to the freezer. I found Zoe lying on the ground and kicking her feet in the air, trying to match the rhythm of some silly song. Zane slept in his rocking infant swing. I grabbed the gift I’d brought and laid on my back next to Zoe.

She looked over at me with a large grin. Her tangled mass of frizzy hair matched mine, only hers looked adorable. “How’s my Zoe girl?” I poked a finger in her side.

She giggled.

“What was that?” I poked her again.

“Aunt Piper,” she said with a laugh. She grabbed her toes and rolled on her side to face me.

“I brought you something.” I showed her the paint-with-water princess book I’d picked up in the toy aisle at the grocery store.

With wide eyes she took the book in her chubby fingers. “Tank you,” she said in toddler speak, ignoring me and devouring the pink bedecked princess on the cover.

“Maybe we can paint after dinner.” I sat up and crossed my legs. “Do you want to look at the pictures?”

Zoe nodded, and I pulled her into my lap. I held the book wide and turned the pages while she reverently ogled each royal picture.

“Hi, Piper,” Lauren wandered in from the kitchen with Miles, wiping her hands on her polka-dot apron.

“Hi.” I smiled and turned back to looking at the book with Zoe.

Lauren sat on the couch next to Miles. “How was your day?”

“It was pretty normal.” That was the easy answer. Work had gone as I’d expected, but it wasn’t exactly normal. I had messaged Kimberly, Sebastian, and Jenkin and explained that Gabriel had agreed to recruit some friends for his shots in the outdoors. He wouldn’t commit to anything when it came to his nightlife shoot. I chalked it up to disappointment and figured we’d come up with a plan before crunch time.

“Xavier said you met some guy from the base,” Miles said.

Leave it to Xavier to tattletale. “His name’s Gabriel,” I said casually and turned another page of Zoe’s paint book. “We met at the dry cleaner.”

Lauren smiled and scooted forward on the couch.
